Skiing History
in Andorra
Located high in the Pyrenees mountains between France and Spain, the Principality of Andorra takes up just 450 square kilometres.
Andorra is well known for both duty-free goods and quality skiing, with Pas De La Casa being the largest and most popular ski resort.
The official language is Catalan, but many Andorrans also speak Spanish, French and English. An estimated 13 million people visit this tiny country each year.
The skiing area was originally founded by Francesc Viladomat in the year 1956-57. They opened the first ski lift on the mountain Coll Blanc, which was powered by a truck engine. The resort has come a long way since its humble beginnings with many modern lifts now servicing the slopes. In 2003/04 the area of Pas de la Casa and Grau Roig joined together with Soldeu, El Tarter, Canillo and Encamp to make up Grandvalira. In 2007 Grandvalira took its first steps into France, opening the Portes De Neige area.
Andorra is one of the most recent success stories of world skiing. Most of the ski areas have expanded rapidly over the past thirty years, helped by their combined reputations for good snow, southern sunshine and cheap prices when compared to other ski resorts worldwide.
Coming to Andorra has been made very easy with many of the major tour operators organising package ski and snowboard holidays there. If you decide to organise the trip yourself many of the low cost airlines now fly to nearby airports such as Barcelona, Girona, Reus, Toulouse, and Carcassonne. From these airports you can organise your transfers to Andorra with coach companies such as Novatel, Eurolines or with one of the many private transfer companies.
Transfer times can vary depending on the arrival airport and to which resort. Weather conditions may add extra time to transfers.
