Shopping
in Andorra
Shopping in Pas De La Casa
There are two main supermarkets in Pas De La Casa, the Spar supermarket has a good selection of English products and local products, and Record supermarket has mainly local products.
You also have an excellent selection of shops selling everything from sports gear to designer labels and jewellery to electrical items. Make sure you shop around as the prices can vary a considerable amount.
Shopping in the Capital
For more extensive shopping you should take a trip to Andorra la Vella, the capital city. Getting there is very easy.
There is public transport. The company is called Hispana Andorrana and the Buses depart from the church at the bottom of town, when you get into the Andorra la Vella it can be tricky, as the bus drops you off in a different place to where it picks you up to bring you back. Another option is a taxi. They work pretty much the same as anywhere else, and hotel receptions will usually call one for you, or you can flag them down. Taxis cannot be booked in Andorra la Vella, therefore you just have to wait for it to come. Beware that the taxi will start its meter where it sets off from, and not from where you get in! The tour operators also normally run shopping trips into the capital using their own coaches. You will be picked up from the church and a rep will accompany you, this is an excellent choice as the rep can point you in the right direction!
Once you're there, you can expect to find a fantastic array of shops selling everything you can imagine from clothes, electrical goods, jewellery, perfume, alcohol, cigarettes and tobacco, all at duty free prices! Last year the government introduced a sales tax of 4%, but prices are still very low.
Currency and Money Exchange
The currency of Andorra is the Euro. You can change money in many places, the bank, in many hotel receptions or in some of the Bars (Paddy’s), as well as this you can take money out of one of the many cash machines in the village. Remember that the opening hours of the bank are 10.00 – 1300 and 1400 - 1600. This is normally the time you will be up enjoying the mountain. When changing your money be aware of the exchange rate in the hotel receptions as they can be quite low and they will also charge you high commission rates!
Duty Free Allowances
Andorra has customs on both the French and Spanish borders, where regular vehicle searches are carried out. The main duty free allowances per person, as per the Andorran government in February 2008 are:
- Tobacco & Cigarettes: 300 cigarettes or 150 cigars (under 3g each) or 75 cigars (over 3g each) or 400g of pipe tobacco
